Lungs and IVC ultrasound assessment
Despite major treatment advancements, Heart Failure admissions and short-term readmissions remain frequent. Fluid congestion, linked to ineffective diuresis, is a leading cause for readmission. Non-invasive techniques have been used to guide fluid management - one of these techniques is lungs ultrasound assessment.
We have developed a 9-zone lung and IVC ultra sound assessment (LUICA) that is delivered by HF nurses during and after the hospital course. We trained nurses with limited or no previous ultrasound assessment experience to obtain ultrasound images and provide diagnostic imaging support about patient volume status. We now want to determine whether a brief introduction/self-teaching method about lung ultrasonography and pathology will be adequate to educate nurses to be able to provide diagnostic support about lung and IVC congestion.
